Visiting the Acropolis is an overwhelming experience for many, as observing the grandeur of the different monuments that make it up is truly impressive. Many questions begin to arise as we walk through this highly important archaeological site, but without a doubt one keeps coming up among those who join us: why is it called the Parthenon? That is why today we have set out to answer it for everyone. Join us on a journey back to the past!

What is special about the Acropolis of Athens? Keys to understanding its importance

When people ask us what is special about the Acropolis of Athens, we actually believe it would be more appropriate to ask what is not special about this site. We are not talking only about a hill with ancient temples; it is where ideas that transformed the world were born: democracy, rational philosophy, theatre as a political and social tool, and a concept of art based on harmony, proportion, and ideal beauty.

Who ordered the construction of the Parthenon? History of the monument

When we look at the top of the hill and contemplate the Acropolis, the most natural thing is to find ourselves wondering how they could possibly have built it in ancient times — and for good reason! If you too inevitably find yourself asking who ordered the construction of the Parthenon and why this building became the most powerful symbol of Greek civilization, you are in luck. Join us on this journey through the true history of the Parthenon!

How to organize your guided visit to the Parthenon of Athens: schedules and tips

General access to the Parthenon of Athens and its accessibility

The main access to the Acropolis is located on the western slope, near Theorias Street, although it can also be accessed from the southern slope, near the Acropolis Museum. Entry is organized through mandatory time slots, so it is essential to respect the time selected on the ticket.

For people with reduced mobility, there is an elevator on the northern slope, about 300 meters from the exit of the site, which allows direct access to the Acropolis plateau, near the Erechtheion. Both the northern and southern slopes have accessible routes, although assistance is recommended.
